Search Adams County Court Records

The main online starting point is Pennsylvania UJS Case Search. It is a free public docket service for many appellate, Court of Common Pleas criminal, Magisterial District Court, traffic, and citation records. The portal is useful when the case has a docket number, participant name, citation number, complaint number, OTN, incident number, or filing-date range. UJS warns that public docket sheets may trail recent filing-office entries, so a same-day filing or order may still need a direct office check.

Adams County court records are not all in one database. Criminal Common Pleas dockets are searched through UJS, then copies come from the Clerk of Courts. Civil and family case files are handled by the Prothonotary. Traffic, summary criminal, landlord-tenant, preliminary arraignment, preliminary hearing, and smaller civil matters often begin in a Magisterial District Court. Estate, marriage, guardianship, and other Orphans' Court records use a county search path separate from UJS.

1. Open UJS Case Search and choose the search route that matches the record, such as participant name, docket number, citation number, complaint number, OTN, or date filed.
2. Use Adams County or the Adams - 51 Judicial District filter when a statewide name search returns too many results.
3. Open the docket sheet and confirm the court, case caption, filing date, status, parties, charges or claim type, and docket entries.
4. If the public sheet does not show the file needed, contact the office that owns that record type: Prothonotary, Clerk of Courts, Magisterial District Court, or Orphans' Court.
5. For copy requests, be ready to provide the docket number, party name, approximate year, requested document, fee, and a self-addressed stamped envelope when the office requires mail return.

The Pennsylvania courts public-records page describes free docket sheets and aggregate data, but a docket sheet is not the same as a certified criminal-history check. Adams County research notes that certified criminal record checks must come from the Pennsylvania State Police, not the Clerk of Courts.

Adams County Court Records Fields

UJS Case Search works best when the search uses a field tied to the case type. A citation number is the cleanest route for traffic matters. A docket number is best for an exact Common Pleas or MDJ match. Name searches can work, but they should be narrowed by county, judicial district, court office, or date range when the name is common.

Adams County Civil Record Requests

Civil and family filings at the Court of Common Pleas are a Prothonotary function. The Adams County Prothonotary page identifies Beverly Boyd as the elected Prothonotary and cites statutory duties under 42 Pa.C.S.A. Sections 2736 and 2737. That office is the local fallback when a civil or family record is not available through a public docket search or when a user needs a filing copy, certified copy, decree, judgment, lien record, name-change file, or similar Common Pleas civil document.

This office matters because many Adams County civil court records are office-held files, not full public document downloads.

Examples include complaints, writs, judgments, liens, mortgage foreclosure, quiet title, name change, divorce, family case filings, and protected-from-abuse related filings. The research notes that Prothonotary motions and petitions generally carry a $29 filing fee unless exempt, and the 2026 fee schedule includes examples such as name change, quiet title, writ of summons, and mortgage foreclosure filings. Those are filing fees, not proof that every file is online. For access, start with the docket details that are known, then ask the Prothonotary what copy or certification process applies.

Adams County Criminal Record Requests

Criminal Common Pleas court records are kept by the Adams County Clerk of Courts. The Clerk of Courts page identifies Kelly A. Lawver as the elected Clerk of Courts and notes that the office is custodian of the court seal and collects costs, fines, fees, and restitution. UJS is the first search route for many criminal dockets, but the local office is the path for copies, older searches, and filing-office records that are not fully shown in the public docket.

That office is the copy and search fallback when a criminal case docket points to an Adams County Common Pleas file.

The Clerk's Access to Records and E-filing page gives the key request rule. Copies or docket printouts may be obtained for a fee by completing a Request for Access Form and sending it with the fee and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Research lists the search fee as $12.50 per name for 1986-present records and $25.50 per hour per name for 1800-1985 records. That same page warns that the Clerk of Courts does not provide certified criminal background checks.

Adams County MDJ Court Records

Lower-level Adams County court records are often Magisterial District Court records. The county's Magisterial District Judges page states that the four district courts handle traffic offenses, summary criminal matters, municipal code violations, preliminary arraignments and hearings, landlord-tenant suits, and civil claims where damages do not exceed $12,000. These cases may appear in UJS, but office contact can still matter for payment issues, missed hearings, continuances, or local file questions.

The Orphans' Court path is separate. The Adams County Orphans' Court record search gives free public index and case docketing access back to 1800 for public categories. Estate matters, formal and informal accounts, trusts, small estate settlements, and marriage applications may be visible. Adoptions, gestational births, terminations of parental rights, and some incapacity matters are not public online. Register of Wills and Recorder eSearch is a paid path for estate index/images and related land records, not a general court-record database.

What Adams Court Records Show

A public docket sheet is a summary of the case, not always the whole file. It may identify the court, docket number, caption, filing date, case status, parties, attorneys, hearing events, docket entries, dispositions, orders, charges, fines, costs, restitution, and cross-court numbers. Documents themselves may not be downloadable. If the user needs a filed pleading, certified order, decree, or full case copy, the correct office must review the file and apply public-access limits.

Public Access and Restricted Records

Pennsylvania court access is governed first by the judiciary's public-access rules. 204 Pa. Code Section 213.81 provides the statewide case-record public access policy. The Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law applies to many agency records, but court case records follow judicial access rules. That distinction matters in Adams County because a court file request is not handled the same way as a county agency open-records request.

Restricted records include sealed, expunged, juvenile, adoption, gestational birth, termination of parental rights, mental-health, and protected personal identifier material. Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, minors' names, and confidential documents should not be treated as generally public. Adult criminal expungement is addressed under 18 Pa.C.S. Section 9122, while juvenile expungement is addressed under 18 Pa.C.S. Section 9123.

Adams County Court Record Offices

Choose the office by record type before sending a request. The Court of Common Pleas and Court Administration are centered at the Adams County Courthouse in Gettysburg. UJS lists the courthouse at 111 Baltimore Street with public hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, while county Court Administration is listed at 117 Baltimore Street, 4th Floor. Record offices are split by function, so the room and office matter.
